Blair Brothers run a commercial Angus herd on the plains of western South Dakota. We use proven AI sires with high accuracy EPD’s to make genetic progress in a number of different traits. We run our cows in groups of 300-400 head, mainly for pasture management concerns, but it also identifies the cattle that can compete in our environment. All heifers are synchronized and bred AI. Only the heifers that conceive AI are kept for replacements. The others are fed and sold through U.S. Premium Beef or marketed as bred heifers in December. The cows are bred AI for two cycles and then exposed to bulls of our raising. The bulls are sold as yearlings by private treaty at the ranch. Every bull we sell is the direct son of an AI sire out of an AI daughter. Many bulls are four to eight generations of AI sires stacked for calving ease, carcass weight, docility, marbling and rib eye. In the past few years our steers and open heifers have graded 98-100% Choice or higher, 40-75% Prime and 85-95% CAB or higher, while gaining 4.0-5.7 pounds per day and converting 5.2-5.7 on a dry matter basis.
