USDA Choice Select Spread
USDA's Choice/Select (C/S) spread impacts how cattle are rewarded through U.S. Premium Beef. The Choice/Select spread fluctuates based on supply/demand for Choice versus Select beef.
Will the average premium for USPB cattle be lower when the spread is low? Perhaps, a higher Choice/Select spread allows for more total premiums available for cattle that grade a high percent Choice. Remember, the four-week rolling average Choice/Select spread we use to establish our Choice premium has never been negative. The USPB grid has always paid a premium for Choice verses Select. It simply changes with supply and demand of the two grades.
