Thorstenson Gelbvieh Angus is a family run farm/ranch that focuses on providing trouble free, performance seedstock. The Thorstenson family has been raising cattle in north central South Dakota since 1885 and registered Gelbvieh since 1975. We added registered Angus in 1993. Today, we market registered Gelbvieh and Angus cattle in addition to Balancer bulls (Gelbvieh x Black or Red Angus cross) at our annual spring production sale. Artificial Insemination has been used extensively in our breeding program since the early 1970's. We continue to AI approximately two-thirds of our cowherd annually. With our combination of genetics, we offer commercial ranchers a simple plan to maintain hybrid vigor without complicated crossbreeding systems. Our cattle combine calving ease, moderate mature size and marbling with growth, muscle, fertility and pounds of calf per cow exposed. We perform genomic testing on 20-30% of our bulls.
